The proceeds from the concert are going to the United Church of Canada Beads of Hope Campaign which has a target of $1 million to be used to help local agencies deal with the HIV/AIDS pandemic which has already infected over 40 million people throughout the developing world.

Text Box: How Centennial-Japanese U.C. Evolved
- - By Fred Taylor - -
Text Box: At one time in this district, there was a large population of white, Anglo-Saxons. In the 1950’s there was a gradual influx of other nationalities and religions. This resulted in a reduction of church members who moved to the suburbs.

As a result the first church to feel the decline was Carmen United who merged with Grace United on College Street. They in turn joined with Wesley United to become Wesley Grace Carmen United Church.

Meanwhile Westmoreland United and Centennial United were also suffering a decline in membership. Because of this the United Church (West Text Box: Presbytery) conducted a survey and decided that the churches involved could no longer carry on in their present form.

After numerous meetings a committee was formed, chaired by myself, resulting in a three point charge composed of Wesley Grace Carmen, Westmoreland and Text Box: “Simply Japanese Canadian Cookbooks”

“Simply Japanese Canadian Cook books” are available for $8.00 from Louise Hirowatari or Ruby Shikaze.
Proceeds to the U.C.W.
Text Box: Centennial.
We were provided with two fine ministers. Rev. Harry Martin and Rev. Paul Vavasour.

Then in 1986, we amalgamated with the Nisei and Issei Japanese congregations. The church came to be known as Centennial-Japanese United Church.
